TARRYTOWN (2025)
Based on the eerie legend of Sleepy Hollow, this Off-Broadway musical tells a fast-paced and heartfelt story through pop music. It explores the difficulties, contradictions, and beauty of connecting with others.
Written, composed, and with lyrics by Adam Wachter, the show premiered in 2017 at the Diversionary
Theatre’s Black Box Theatre in San Diego, California.
In November 2023, Kazuki Nakahara obtained the official license and brought the show to Japan for the first time. He also took on the roles of translator, lyricist, and director for the Japanese production.
TARRYTOWN may seem simple initially, but it tells a deeply complex story. Each character longs for freedom, yet their circumstances prevent them from achieving it.
Although they could choose to abandon everything and pursue freedom, they seem irresistibly drawn to—and trapped by—something mysterious and uncanny about Tarrytown itself.
Through stage design, I wanted to express the forest where ancient spirits rest, and the people gradually consumed by its strange powers.
